Joy seems to be on my mind as the new year begins.
What I was thinking about this morning is that in order to have joy – we have to CAST our cares on Him who cares for us! (1 Peter 5:7). When you cast a fishing line, you give it a good toss. When he tells us to flee the devil – he means to run!
Or… we can hold things that hurt close to us by questioning again and again and trying to figure out “why” or even how to fix it. I am not just talking about our worst life events. I am talking about the people in your life and mine who cause us to feel hurt. I am talking about the little events…little foxes that rob us of joy, day after day.
We tend to quote only that one little portion of Scripture about “casting our cares” but that is so often a bad way to study or remember. The the message can be so incomplete that it doesn’t help us as significantly as God intends. A fuller portion is this:
1 Peter 5:5-7 (HCSB) 5 all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you.
We cannot have joy without grace. We cannot have grace without humbling ourselves before God. We cannot humble ourselves without casting.
There are things we must choose to do in order to have Joy…period.
This year…let’s choose Joy!
