Colossians 1:13-14 (HCSB)
13 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves.
14 We have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, in Him.
In the beautiful song entitled “Wonderful Merciful Savior” the lyrics go…“Who would have thought that a lamb would rescue the souls of men?”
Yes…who would have thought that our God would bother to rescue the souls of men? We make such terrible choices. We cause so much of our own pain. We don’t do even some of the smallest things He tells us to do…the very thing that would keep us from needing to be rescued. So we make our bed…we sleep in it…and we wonder why we suffer.
Yet He longs to rescue us…to give us one more opportunity to live out the purposeful years He has carved out for us.
Who would have thought that our God would go so far as to die to rescue us?
Who would have thought that a wife would go so far to rescue her husband , her marriage and her family.
Who would have thought a mother would spend herself to the breaking point in order to rescue her daughter…or a father his son.
But He has made us in His image. God…is love. He has made us to love.
We don’t love unselfishly and wisely without help. We can’t. We make mistakes…sometimes really big ones. Our spouses, our children make big mistakes. We all make hurtful, unwise, self protective choices. With each person making self serving/self protective choices life can become a painful endurance.
So how in the world do we love well? How does that wife continue to love that selfish husband? How does that mom…the dad… continue to love that careless child?
How would any of us survive let alone thrive, without being rescued again and again and …again! He rescues the souls of men and then…He continually rescues us from selfish destructive choices as we look to Him. We learn to love better…even to love well.
We were made in His image. If we choose…we become more like Him. He rescues us. Our strength…our lives…are intended to help rescue others.
Yes….who would have thought that a lamb would rescue the souls of man…the lives of man…and yet…He does.
So thankful. So very very thankful…
