Are you desperate inside for peace? Maybe it is because of a current situation. Maybe being tied up in knots has become part of your DNA.
If you are a believer…if you belong to Jesus…have chosen to trust Him…He has given you and me the formula…the way to peace. If you have not made that choice…you can. He died and rose again in order to bring you new life! John 3:16
Like so many things God gives us…peace requires some choice…some action. Not a leap, necessarily but a small choice…one step at a time. Well, it might seem like a leap to you but in reality it is a step that He knows you can take or…He wouldn’t ask you to take it. He doesn’t ask us to do anything that He doesn’t equip us to do.
Peace can be so elusive. Who models it, in even a small way? I have said it before about busyness…I will say it about peace. Our society has come to applaud disturbance…inner conflict. It is often worn as a badge of honor. Somehow lacking peace proves that you are accomplishing something. If you are upset…in a war of some kind, it means you are busy conquering. Or does it?
What correlates is that we live in a time when people are inordinately unthankful. People gripe. People complain. It’s what our society has practiced…it is what we model. It is what the media models and…after all, without trying, we do absorb more than we realize while perusing one type of media or another.
Listen…are you listening?
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
But how can I be thankful when I am hurting so badly and what has happened to me (or mine) should not happen to anyone? Why should I request anything of God when He has allowed this terrible thing? Why should I…how can I…ask him for anything and…with thanksgiving!
What I can tell you is…He has instructed us and then followed those instructions with the promise of peace.
I can also tell you that He has been faithful to me through some of the most horrific circumstances life could have thrown me. So…I do not say these things lightly….or even without proof.
My challenge to you is to do what He says in those two verses…do them faithfully. Pray and tell Him how you feel…ask Him for what it is you desire and do it with thanksgiving in your heart. Thanksgiving for what? How about the smile you got this morning from a stranger…or the flower that popped up unexpectedly in your flowerbed? How about for the privilege of asking…for the privilege of having a relationship with Him?
Then…because we can’t do this for ourselves…ask Him to open your eyes so that you will not be leaning into your own understanding…your own blind spots. Your own understanding will leave you without the kind of peace you so desperately need.
Want that kind of peace? God…the one who created you…knows what you need…and loves you so much He has given you really simple instructions to get there.
Easter is tomorrow. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know that your next sunrise would bring a whole new beginning…one that involves peace that transcends all understanding!
You can…you really can…
Trust the One who died for you!
