Romans 12:1-2 (HCSB) 1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
As Priscilla Shirer says, “The word is alive, ya’ll!”
Do you understand it? Do you feel it? His words are written in The Word and The Word is alive! His Word is referred to as being sharper than a two-edged sword. A two-edged sword was razor sharp on each side as well as on the end. This particular sword was a short weapon…not the long saber you might think. Because the sword was short and so very sharp, a blow was tremendously effective as a soldier would thrust his weight forward and plunge the weapon into his enemy.
Of course, the short length also meant you had to get close to do harm…very close. There was mortal danger in getting that close, but the weapon itself was completely dependable.
You likely remember when Jesus was tempted by satan how He quoted Scripture as His answer to satan’s close encounter…his manipulative ploy. The emphasis on this passage is normally placed on how Scripture stops the enemy. This is very true. But it is important to remember that, through this encounter, Jesus left us a picture of how we should use Scripture to straighten out our own thinking when we are faced with unexpected temptation and danger. Of course, Jesus continually teaches us that Scripture is immensely important in preparing for the challenges of each day…not just unexpected blows of life.
Interestingly, the Holy Spirit is also referred to as the “sword of the spirit”. His Word made alive by His Spirit is intended for our victory. This means victory in God’s purposes now and for the future. This is victory that touches…changes my life and yours and therefore touches the lives of those in our sphere.
The Bible is alive! God speaks to us through it! He opens our understanding to the passage we need at the very moment we need it! Priscilla reminds us, “Strongholds are torn down and fortresses are dismantled when you apply the word of God to your everyday living. It literally restructures and rewires our brains!”
Scripture reminds us of what God thinks…who He is. Scripture is the mind of God being spoken to us in situations where we are most tempted to use our own wisdom…our own words…our own muscle. It conquers fear because as we read it, hear it, or quote it, we are reminded of His truth, rather than our own thoughts about how we need to fix this.
It is a sword driven through the heart of the enemy of our soul…demolishing the lies we are so prone to believe. These are the lies that he is whispering in our ear at the most opportune times…or shouting from the rooftops when life gets so intense we don’t know which way to turn.
Lies demolished…removed…replaced with the Truth. The Truth made real and empowered by His Spirit…
His Word is Alive…Ya’ll…!
