Romans 8:15 (NET1) 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.”
What is it you fear most? Your fear is likely connected to something you have experienced and do not want to experience again. That seems reasonable, right?
Here, God is telling us that fear is not the spirit He has given His children. Fear is not from Him. Fear is a spirit of slavery. It keeps us bound up. It keeps us from moving forward…from taking on something we should…something He intends for us to tackle.
Or…maybe we are prone to tackle something we are intended to leave alone…something we are simply to pray about…trust God to handle. Either way…it is fear and God is telling us here that fear is a spirit of slavery.
Fear stems from some lie of the enemy. These are lies we tend to believe each time they surface. Fear twists us up and then…binds us up. It keeps us in knots and takes us down the same path repeatedly.
Perhaps you don’t think of yourself as fearful. But maybe you do recognize yourself as defensive, or as controlling of certain portions of your life and the lives of your family and others.
Maybe there are excruciating circumstances which are very real. These are things that would cause anyone to fear. Maybe there is diagnosis you are waiting on or have just received. You might have frightening problems in your marriage or with your kids or stressful uncertainties in your finances or career.
Whether very real problems or problems you fear might become real, do you long to be free from what twists you into knots? Do you feel like certain fear-based reactions are the only way you know how to handle life and there is just no way out? Can you see from this Scripture what a lie that is? 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Fear is the opposite of faith.
When change seems impossible, ask God for wisdom and then the determination to follow what He has shown you. Each time fear threatens…every time you have the familiar urge to take over or retreat in the same old destructive way…remember Whose child you are and pray. Remember the truth. You are not meant to be enslaved by fear.
I believe…help my unbelief!
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
