Faces Never Covered With Shame…
Psalm 34:5, “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”
Why do we ignore these kinds of biblical truths? Why do we refuse to look to Him? Is it not refusing this one word of wisdom that causes us to feel ashamed in the first place?
Look to Him…look to Him…Look to Him…
Pretty Simple: Looking to Him keeps us from handling life in a way that inevitably brings us shame. Each thing that causes us shame is something we have done (or are doing) and now regret or…humiliation we have taken on because of something that was out of our control.
On the other hand…looking to Him Transforms!
I have seen transformation in the faces of those who finally decide to look to Him and…I have seen the spark go out of the eyes of someone who has decided to willfully choose his/her own way. Each one of us has experienced (chosen) that world of gray. You don’t have to live a completely godless life to feel the shame…to lose the spark. You don’t have to be an obvious rebel!
You can seek God in all other areas yet silently choose badly in just one. At some point, you are going to experience the shame. Of course, you can ignore God so long that you no longer feel ashamed. Still…your life will reflect some version of your disconnect. Maybe you often feel weary or sad but put it off to stress. Perhaps your temper flairs unexpectedly or you sometimes withdraw and, in doing so, confuse and hurt those around you.
You can put a big smile on your face and maybe even force a spring in your step, but your eyes…the window of the soul…will be missing the spark. Somewhere buried inside, your heart is heavy…even when you manage to hide your duplicity well or justify it endlessly.
Your sin…your disobedience (and mine) brings us what we think we want for the moment. But the heart…oh the heart is deceitfully wicked. Guard it…for it is the wellspring of life! He is life and light! Without His Spirit…His presence, unhindered by our willful disobedience, the flame…the spark…the joy will be gone!
And yet, because of His loving mercy, we can choose to repent of (walk away from) our willful choices and say with the Psalmist…
“Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”
Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV) 9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
Proverbs 4:20-23 (NIV) 20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
Matthew 6:22 (NASB) 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.
