Rejecting the Obvious…

“Why do you naïve Christians keep believing Christ is going to come back to rescue you when it has now been a couple of thousand years since he was supposedly on earth?” It’s an old question.

In the New Testament, scoffers would say, “Where is the promise of His coming? Ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.”

Our Sunday study book says, “They said this because as many as 30 years had passed since the ascension of Jesus and still there was no sign of his return.” Now, a couple of thousand years later…people are saying the same thing.

Just as they do today, scoffers willfully ignored the truth: “Long ago the heavens and the earth were brought about from water and through water by the word of God.”

The study says, false prophets “…willfully ignored that the universe didn’t exist and then it did. This was not an oversight but a rejection of the obvious.”

I am forced to ask, “Why?” Why do so many scientists (and others) “willfully ignore” the obvious? Why do so many fight so hard to believe in a big bang or some other theory of how the world came into existence? Why do people choose to believe that life wasn’t created by a loving and powerful God but rather a huge cosmic accident…an explosion…then creating itself into this beautifully complex universe?

In part, I think it is because of the sacrifice it would take to believe in God. Then…I have to ask myself, what sacrifice? If I choose to believe in Him and do life His way, I gain relationships that are more whole, purpose that has far more meaning. I gain inexplicable joy. This…in a world where people are crying out to love and be loved…to find purpose and meaning in it all.

Again…what sacrifice? Christ’s sacrifice was the sacrifice. Once for all…in order to bridge the gap between what He intended for us and our world. This…so that we might love and be loved and live out our lives with purpose and healing that extends to everyone He has placed in our sphere!

How thankful I am that in His grace and mercy, God gave me parents who understood and modeled a faith and a life that made me long to do the same!

2 Peter 3:3-7 (HCSB) 3  First, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days to scoff, living according to their own desires, 4  saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? Ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” 5  They willfully ignore this: Long ago the heavens and the earth were brought about from water and through water by the word of God. 6  Through these waters the world of that time perished when it was flooded. 7  But by the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
